This is how we take care of it

Six steps to good Digestive health

Eat right. Consume protein, carbohydrates and fat in the right amounts and make sure you get plenty of fiber. Eat on a regular schedule.

Drink plenty of water and avoid sugary drinks or those that contain caffeine. Limit alcoholic drinks to 2 a day.

Step 2

Exercise. Moving around helps things move along.

Step 3

Be alert for problems that don't go away. Symptoms such as heartburn, constipation and stomach upset can be caused by things as minor as a bad chili dog or as serious as cancer. If you've been suffering for more than a couple of weeks, see your doctor.

Step 4

Get scheduled tests. Your doctor will tell you when you need to have regular colonoscopies to find and remove precancerous polyps. If your doctor recommends other tests, get those as well.

Step 5

Quit smoking. Among the many reasons to quit smoking, it contributes to digestive problems such as heartburn, ulcers and gallstones.

Step 6

Tips regarding medications

There are a variety of over-the-counter medications that can help with discomfort caused by digestion problems. Buy them now to keep on hand at home, because you won't feel like driving to the drugstore to get them when you need them.

    * If you have severe abdominal pain that is accompanied by a fever, keeps you from eating or gets worse, see your doctor. If the pain is accompanied by blood in your urine, stool or vomit, accompanied by abdominal swelling, accompanied by shortness of breath or dizziness or moves to your chest or shoulders, go to the emergency room.
